![]() Mafia was actually a little closer to the PS1 game Driver in that respect, but no crime game before Mafia tried to tell a story that was quite as tragic, human, and cinematically epic as the tale of Tommy Angelo’s fall into the world of organized crime. It was a narrative-driven crime game that did feature some free-roam sections but emphasized atmosphere, characters, and mission design over sandbox mayhem. ![]() While I generally despise that “clone” label, it’s not even applicable in this case. Released after GTA 3 became a global sensation, and just a couple of months before Vice City‘s blockbuster debut, Mafia was saddled with the “ GTA clone” tag pretty early on. However, there have always been some annoying asterisks surrounding the first Mafia game. That’s not because I still need to download the game (I actually still have the original physical version floating around here somewhere, complete with the game’s original soundtrack) but rather because I hope that this move might just help shine a light on a crime game that still feels underrated. Truth be told, my heart skipped a beat when I heard the news that Mafia will be free on Steam. ![]() That obviously good news for fans of the franchise as well as anyone looking for something to play over the long Labor Day weekend. Yes, in celebration of the game’s 20th anniversary (as well as the official announcement that a new Mafia game is on the way), 2K Games has decided to make 2002’s Mafia free on Steam from September 1st through September 5th. Even better, it’s free on Steam this weekend. However, for my money (which, in this case, happens to be no money) 2002’s Mafia is still one of your best options. You could even just dive into the world of GTA Online ( if you dare). If the Saints Row reboot didn’t quite do it for you and you’re still looking for a crime game to tide you over until the release of GTA 6…well, you’ve got quite a few options.
